Após não conseguir acertar com Fred, do Lyon, os dirigentes do Middlesbrough vão atrás de Afonso Alves. Para isso, o clube inglês estaria disposto a pagar 10 milhões de euros (R$ 26.1 milhões) para tirá-lo do Heerenveen (HOL).
A notícia ganhou força depois que Afonso não acertou com o AZ Alkmaar nesta semana. O Middlesbrough espera anunciar a contratação do brasileiro até o final desta semana.
Afonso chamou a atenção do mundo do futebol após marcar 35 gols pelo Heerenveen na temporada passada. Estes gols fizeram com que o atacante ganhasse uma chance na Seleção Brasileira, que acabou sendo muito criticada pela imprensa e torcida.

AZ kan een miljoenenclaim verwachten als het de arbitragezaak tegen Alves verliest. De raadsheer van de Braziliaan, Pim de Vos, zei dat tegen de Telegraaf zondag. Volgens de advocaat heeft AZ een verkeerde voorstelling van zaken.
Als voorbeeld noemde De Vos een schrijven dat AZ stuurde naar een geïnteresseerde koper. “De club heeft een brief naar Middlesbrough gestuurd om aan te geven dat Alves eigendom van AZ is. Daardoor kan Middlesbrough worden beïnvloed en zelfs afzien van een transfer. Dat geldt ook voor andere partijen.”
De arbitragezaak moet oordelen of Alves in december een rechtsgeldige arbeidsovereenkomst heeft getekend bij de Alkmaarders of niet. Als blijkt van niet, dan zal het kamp Alves een schadevergoeding eisen. “En dan praten we over miljoenen”, aldus De Vos.
