More To Come From Boro’s Six-Shooter
GARETH SOUTHGATE is already looking forward to Afonso Alves’s first full season in the Premier League after seeing him blast six goals in his last six games.
The Brazilian international sprang to life with a brilliant double against Manchester United and hasn’t looked back since.
After paying a club record fee for the 27-year-old, Southgate believes we’ll see him go from strength to strength in a Boro shirt.
“We said we won’t see the best of him until next year and he’ll be better for the experience of the last few months,” he said.
“He’s slowly adapting to the nature of this league – you don’t get free-kicks for the things you do in Holland and the standard is better here but his ratio of goals to games is very healthy now.
“The pre-season is going to be very important. It will be a chance to nail down how we expect him to work next season, as it will be with all the players.
Like all players, Alves needed time to adjust to the rough and tumble of the English game but he’s adapted his style and beginning to reproduce the form that made him Holland’s Player of the Year.
“He’s a goal scorer,” said Southgate. “Aspects of the rest of his game need to be worked on and improved but what we’ve seen in training is what we saw against City.
“Others will score goals, but he lives for scoring goals. He’s got a very cool nature and sometimes people look at that and take it the wrong way and think he doesn’t care, but he certainly does.
“He’ll score goals – I think we’ve seen that already in the matches he’s played. In addition, we’ll have Mido back and he’ll score goals. Between them, all four strikers each offer us something different.

“Tuncay and Aliadiere will both be stronger for the season they’ve had. Tuncay scored eight goals and that’s a decent return considering he’s not an out-and-out goalscorer. He is a different type of player, but I think he will score more goals.
“Sometimes he looks to do the spectacular rather than a simple finish, but that’s what makes him so enjoyable to watch.”
Meanwhile, Southgate praised Stewart Downing’s goalscoring contribution after his brace against City took him to double figures for the season, with nine coming in the league.
“Ten goals is a good target for a wide player and he’s hit it,” he said.
“He’s matured a lot throughout the season. At times he hasn’t had enough belief in himself and he’s got the evidence of what he can do now.
“We’ve spoken about Ronaldo and watched clips of what he does. Because he’s been in the team for so long we forget sometimes he’s only 23 so there’s a lot of room for improvement still.
“But the quality of his second goal on Sunday was top drawer.”
